What Is Zoster?

Varicella-zoster virus, also referred to as shingles, is a viral infection. It is caused the by the virus that causes chickenpox. Once a person has been infected with chickenpox, the virus lies dormant in the body and can resurface at anytime as shingles.
  1. Symptoms

    • Symptoms of shingles may include a clustered rash on one side of the body, blisters, pain, fever, headache, and fatigue.

    Diagnosis

    • Shingles is typically diagnosed by sending a tissue sample of the rash to the laboratory for testing of the varicella-zoster virus.

    Treatment

    • Treatment of shingles generally consist of anti-viral medication and prescription pain medication.

    Complications

    • In some people infected with shingles the symptoms subside shortly after treatment. However, for some individuals, symptoms can last long after treatment.

    Long-Term Treatment

    • For individuals with long-term complications associated with shingles, pain management may be recommended by your physician. These medications may include anti-convulsants, anti-depressants, and prescriptions medication.
