Superbugs, or strains of bacteria resistant to antibiotics, are as old as the treatment of diseases using antibiotics. As the employment of antibiotics spreads and increases, superbugs such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) have continued to grow faster than new antibiotics are being developed. Practice good hygiene. Wash your hands often with warm water and soap, especially when you're sick or before eating.

Avoid antibiotics when possible. Do not ask for antibiotics if you have a viral infection. Instead, take medication or treatments to alleviate your symptoms.

Use antibiotics responsibly when required. Take all antibiotics prescribed. Do not share antibiotics or use leftover antibiotics.

Practice caution when in a hospital or doctor's office. Ask doctors and nurses to wash their hands before each checkup and wash your own hands regularly.

Avoid unnecessary contact with those who are ill. Do not share glasses, dishes, sheets or towels with someone who is actively sick. Wash your hands before and after contacting a sick child, partner or parent.
