When is the sex of a baby determined?

The sex of a baby is determined at the moment of conception, when a sperm cell carrying either an X or Y chromosome fertilizes an egg cell carrying an X chromosome. If the sperm carries an X chromosome, the baby will be female. If the sperm carries a Y chromosome, the baby will be male.
