Does fertilization take place in the uterus?

Fertilization typically does not occur in the uterus. Fertilization usually happens in the fallopian tubes, where the sperm meets and penetrates the egg. After fertilization, the resulting zygote then begins its journey through the fallopian tube toward the uterus. This journey can take several days, during which time the zygote undergoes cell division and develops into a blastocyst. Once it reaches the uterus, the blastocyst implants into the uterine lining, where it continues to develop into an embryo and eventually a fetus.
