What Are Solutions to Build Up Low Sperm?

If you and your mate are having difficulty conceiving, it may be due to a low sperm count. Although only one sperm is needed to fertilize an egg, the odds of a sperm reaching that egg are very low. For this reason, you want to ensure your sperm count is at a high level. There are many things you can do that can increase your sperm count and the likelihood you and your mate will become proud parents.
  1. Temperature Is Critical

    • Sperm need a cooler environment to thrive than your normal body temperature. This is why the testicles are outside of the body. Your clothing choices can make a big difference in your sperm count. Wearing cotton boxers or boxer briefs can keep your testicles cooler. Avoid wearing tight or restrictive underwear and pants. Avoid hot tubs, saunas and prolonged hot baths when you are trying to conceive. If you sit at a desk all day, get up and move around at least once per hour if possible.

    Maintain Healthy Habits

    • Drinking alcohol, smoking and consuming caffeine all have negative effects on the hormones responsible for sperm production. If you must consume these products, do so in moderation. Maintain a healthy body weight by getting enough exercise and proper rest. Also make sure you are getting enough zinc. A lack of zinc in your diet can lead to reduced testosterone levels. Healthy sources of zinc are foods like beef, turkey, raw cashews and raw almonds. Talk to your doctor about zinc supplements if you think you might have a zinc deficiency.

    Timing Is Important

    • Having sex on a regular basis in sync with female ovulation is important. But ejaculating more than a few times per week can significantly lower your sperm count. Do not masturbate when you and your partner are attempting to get pregnant, as this will lower the sperm count in your semen as well. Try having intercourse in the morning or early afternoon. These are the times when your sperm count is naturally at its highest.

    Medical Assistance

    • If your doctor diagnoses you with a low sperm count, there are medical options he may offer to either increase your sperm count or assist you and your partner in getting pregnant. Surgical options are available if you have a swollen vein in the scrotum. This is a common cause of male infertility. Hormone replacement therapy might also be recommended. Your doctor can explain these option to you in detail.

If you exhaust all options and are still having difficulty getting pregnant, your doctor may offer other solutions. In vitro fertilization (IVF) or Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ISI) are both options available. Both of these options require a physician's intervention in getting the sperm to fertilize the egg.
