Can you use invitro fertilization after a tubaligation?
In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a fertility treatment that can be used to help couples conceive a child. During IVF, eggs are retrieved from the ovaries and fertilized with sperm in a laboratory dish. The resulting embryos are then transferred to the uterus.
Tubal ligation is a surgical procedure that cuts, ties or seals the fallopian tubes, the tubes that carry eggs from the ovaries to the uterus. This prevents eggs from being fertilized by sperm, and is considered a permanent form of birth control.
In most cases, IVF cannot be used after a tubal ligation because the fallopian tubes are no longer able to transport eggs. However, there are some exceptions. In some cases, it may be possible to reverse a tubal ligation and restore fertility. In other cases, it may be possible to use IVF with a technique called microsurgical epididymal sperm aspiration (MESA) or percutaneous epididymal sperm aspiration (PESA). These techniques involve retrieving sperm directly from the epididymis, the tube that stores sperm in the testicles.
If you are considering IVF after a tubal ligation, it is important to talk to your doctor to discuss your options.
