What does it mean to have twins?

Having twins means giving birth to two babies at the same time.

Twins can be either monozygotic (identical) or dizygotic (fraternal).

- Monozygotic twins develop from a single fertilized egg that splits into two embryos. These twins are genetically identical and always the same sex.

- Dizygotic twins develop from two separate fertilized eggs. These twins are not genetically identical and can be the same sex or opposite sexes.

The incidence of twin births varies around the world, but it is estimated that about 1 in 80 births are twins. The rate of twin births has been increasing in recent decades, due in part to the use of fertility treatments.

Having twins can be a wonderful experience, but it can also be challenging. Parents of twins often have to deal with double the diapers, double the feedings, and double the tantrums. However, the rewards of raising twins are also doubled. Twin parents often say that their children have a special bond that no one else can understand.
