Gonal-F Side Effects

Gonal-F is a brand name for follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), a naturally occurring hormone used as a fertility drug. Gonal-F stimulates ovulation and production of multiple follicles (eggs) in women, and stimulates sperm production in men. Many side effects are possible, some serious.
  1. Common Side Effects

    • Several side effects are common with Gonal-F. These include abdominal pain, breast pain, dizziness, fatigue, headache, nausea, ovarian cysts and upset stomach.

    Considerations

    • Gonal-F increases the potential for multiple births, which can be risky for both mother and babies. Premature babies may face life-threatening complications and develop long-term health problems. Postpartum depression rates are significantly higher in women with multiple births.

    Birth Defects

    • Gonal-F causes severe birth defects, so a woman must stop using the hormone as soon as she suspects she is pregnant.

    Serious Side Effects

    • Serious side effects associated with Gonal-F include allergic reactions and blood clots. About 5 percent of women treated with FHS develop ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), according to Drugs.com. This disorder can be fatal if not treated promptly.

    Contraindications

    • Women with certain health conditions may not be able to safely take Gonal-F. These include abnormal vaginal bleeding, ovarian cysts, thyroid conditions and certain types of cancer.
