Side Effects of Repronex 75
Repronex 75 is a fertility drug that is used to increase egg production in women. It may cause mild to severe side effects, and women must always be under the care of a physician while using this medication.-
Identification
-
Repronex 75 is a brand name of injectable menotropin. This type of prescription medication is composed of two hormones: follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). The hormones in Repronex 75 are collected and isolated from the urine of postmenopausal women, whose bodies at this phase of life produce extremely high levels of FSH and LH.
Function
-
Repronex 75 functions by increasing the maturation of eggs in the ovaries. Menotropin medications must be used in conjunction with another hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) for successful egg maturation and release.
Repronex 75 must be used for seven to 12 days along with hCG. If successful, this type of infertility treatment may be used to collect eggs for in-vitro fertilization treatments or to increase the chances of conception and pregnancy during intrauterine insemination procedures.
Side Effects
-
Repronex 75 can produce ovarian, pulmonary and vascular side effects, increased risks of multiple births, hypersensitivity to the drug and allergic reactions.
Effects on the ovaries from Repronex 75 use include enlarged ovaries and a condition known as ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). While both of these conditions result in enlarged ovaries, OHSS is a more serious condition that can result in severe pain, nausea, bloating, vomiting and excessive ovarian enlargement.
Pulmonary and vascular effects that have been associated with menotropin use include embolism in the veins or arteries, reduced blood flow to organs or limbs, and stroke.
Multiple births that may result from Repronex 75 therapies increase risks for premature delivery, miscarriage, birth defects and health risks to the mother such as gestational diabetes.
Some women may develop a hypersensitivity to Repronex 75 or, in rare cases, they may have a severe allergic reaction. These reactions may cause facial swelling, bloating, hives or swelling of the throat.
Considerations
-
Repronex 75 is not an effective infertility treatment in women who are suffering from a condition known as primary ovarian failure. This condition affects the ovaries' ability to produce eggs and cannot be resolved with menotropin medications.
Repronex 75 should not be used by women who have pituitary conditions or tumors, thyroid dysfunctions, ovarian cysts, polycystic ovarian syndrome or allergies to menotropins.
Warning
-
Women must never use any type of menotropin without the advice and care of a physician. As Repronex 75 increases a woman's risks of multiple births, women should always talk with their physician about embryo termination or how to avoid embryo termination before Repronex 75 treatments begin.
Women who experience severe reactions such as swelling, hives or vomiting after using Repronex 75 must contact their physician immediately.
