Mild OHSS Symptoms

According to Duke University, anywhere from 1 to 5 percent of women undergoing infertility treatments experience ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). Intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in-vitro fertilization (IVF) may both result in OHSS, and symptoms appear within 3 to 5 days after the human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) injection.
  1. Pain

    • Patients with mild OHSS will have abdominal pain and distention due to fluid retention. Pain is also caused by enlarged, tender ovaries.

    Difficulty Breathing

    • Shortness of breath is caused by fluid retention, which puts pressure on the diaphragm, preventing it from moving freely.

    Nausea and Weight Gain

    • Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea are common with OHSS. Patients with mild OHSS also retain between 5 to 10 lbs. of fluid in the first three days.

    Severe OHSS

    • Rapid weight gain beyond 10 lbs. and infrequent urination are signs that mild OHSS may be progressing in severity. Severe OHSS requires urgent medical attention.

    Time Frame

    • OHSS usually resolves on its own within 1 to 2 weeks, but it may linger with pregnancy. While it lasts, expect to be closely followed by a physician.

    Self Care

    • Patients should drink fluids containing electrolytes, such as Gatorade, to help balance fluid levels in the body. Weight should be checked daily with any increase reported to a physician.
