Risk Factors for Ulcerative Colitis

* Age: Ulcerative colitis is most commonly diagnosed in people between the ages of 15 and 30, but it can occur at any age.

* Family history: People with a family history of ulcerative colitis are more likely to develop the condition.

* Race and ethnicity: Ulcerative colitis is more common in whites and Ashkenazi Jews.

* Smoking: Smoking cigarettes is the most significant modifiable risk factor for ulcerative colitis.

* Obesity: People who are obese are more likely to develop ulcerative colitis.

* Certain medications: Certain medications, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and oral contraceptives, can increase the risk of ulcerative colitis.

* Immune system disorders: People with certain immune system disorders, such as Crohn's disease and celiac disease, are more likely to develop ulcerative colitis.

It's important to note that having one or more of these risk factors does not mean that you will definitely develop ulcerative colitis. These are simply factors that can increase your risk of developing the condition.
