Donnatol Side Effects

Donnatol or Donnatal is a prescription medication used to treat stomach cramps caused by disorders of your bowel or intestines. Despite its effectiveness, Donnatal poses a risk for side effects in some patients.
  1. Types of Common Side Effects

    • Common side effects of Donnatal include dry mouth, dizziness, difficulty urinating, decreased urination, blurred vision, decreased sense of taste, nausea, vomiting, impotence, bloating and pain in your muscles or bones.

    Time Frame

    • Side effects of Donnatal typically begin within a few days of treatment and gradually subside once your body becomes acclimated to the drug.

    Features: Drug Interactions

    • There are some medications that increase your risk of side effects from Donnatal, including antidepressants, antihistamines, barbiturates, narcotic pain relievers, corticosteroids and sedatives. When taken with blood thinners like Warfarin, Donnatal increases your risk of developing uncontrollable bleeding.

    Risks

    • Because Donnatal has the potential to decrease sweating, it poses the risk for heatstroke in some patients. Donnatal contains a barbiturate medication that can cause physical dependence and severe withdrawal symptoms if use of the drug is suddenly stopped, including convulsions and delirium.

    • Since it has the potential to cause dizziness, you should not operate a motor vehicle or heavy machinery until you know how Donnatal will affect you. Patients over the age of 65 are more susceptible to the side effects of Donnatal.
