Side Effects of Remicade for Crohn's Disease
Remicade, the brand name for infliximab, is a biologic therapy used to treat Crohn's disease, as well as rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. It is used when conventional treatments are not effective. By inhibiting the effects of TNF alpha (tumor necrosis factor alpha) immune cells, it can reduce inflammation. It is delivered through an intravenous drip infusion. While using Remicade, you may experience some side effects.-
Allergic Reaction
-
You may have an allergic reaction to Remicade during or immediately following your infusion. Side effects that indicate such a reaction can include high or low blood pressure, breathing problems, chest pain, swelling of your face and hands, itching, rash, fever and chills. In some cases, administration of Benedryl prior to receiving Remicade can alleviate this reaction. If your reaction is severe you probably will not be able to receive Remicade treatments.
Infections
-
Your immune system is weakened while receiving Remicade. As a result you are more susceptible to infections, such as respiratory tract and urinary tract infections. You should avoid people that are ill while receiving Remicade. If you develop an infection, you will have to discontinue Remicade until the infection is gone, as it can worsen the infection.
Tuberculosis
-
Remicade may cause a reactivation of inactive tuberculosis. Therefore, prior to beginning treatment your doctor will perform a tuberculosis skin test to determine if you have or have ever had the illness. You should be monitored during Remicade treatment to watch for signs of tuberculosis.
Blood Disorders
-
While receiving Remicade treatments you may have decreased blood counts in white cells, red cells and platelets. These can result in symptoms of easily bruising or bleeding, pale skin or a persistent fever. Your doctor should perform regular blood tests to monitor your blood counts.
Lymphoma
-
If you have Crohn's disease, you are at a higher risk of developing lymphoma, a cancer of the immune system. While receiving Remicade your risk for lymphoma is increased. According to Remicade.com, this risk most often occurs in young adult males who are also taking azathioprine or 6-mercaptopurine.
Other Side Effects
-
Jaundice, as a result of liver injury, may occur. Symptoms include yellowed skin and eyes, abdominal pain on the right side, extreme fatigue, fever and dark urine. Nervous system problems can occur that result in weakness, numbness, tingling, seizures and changes to your vision. A Lupus-like syndrome can develop that includes shortness of breath, joint pain, chest discomfort and a rash on your cheeks or arms that gets worse with exposure to the sun.
Considerations
-
You should report side effects of Remicade to your doctor and discuss any concerns you may have about the treatment. Be sure to inform your doctor of all medications you are taking, including over-the-counter medications and supplements.
