How to Cut a Suppository

Whole rectal suppositories look like long pills with one flat end and one ovular, slightly pointy tip. Sometimes doctors recommend that patients -- especially infants, toddlers and small children -- take only half of a suppository at a time. A responsible adult should cut the suppository for a half dose and save the other half for the next dose. Keep the suppository in a cool location, such as a refrigerator, until you are ready to cut it and administer it to the patient.
