What causes the lac genes in E. coli to turn off?

The _lac_ genes in _E. coli_ are turned off by the presence of glucose. When glucose is present, it binds to the _lac_ repressor, which then binds to the operator region of the _lac_ operon and prevents transcription of the _lac_ genes.
