IBS Symptoms & Remedies

According to the Mayo Clinic, irritable bowel syndrome or IBS is a chronic and common digestive disorder. There are various causes of IBS, and managing symptoms is usually a matter of identifying triggers and making certain lifestyle changes.
  1. Identification or Signs

    • Different digestive disorders such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease can mimic each other. But unlike these serious conditions, IBS does not damage the intestinal tract. Common signs of IBS include abdominal pain, gas, bloating, constipation and diarrhea.

    Considerations

    • IBS triggers are plentiful. But controlling symptoms often involves reducing the consumption of certain foods. In the case of IBS, dairy products are known to bring on diarrhea, gas and bloating. However, a digestive enzyme supplement can reduce symptoms and help you manage the condition.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Dairy isn't the only IBS trigger. Spicy foods, fatty foods such as red meats, carbonated drinks like soda and artificial sweeteners can produce symptoms such as bloating, constipation and diarrhea. Eliminate problem foods to ease symptoms.

    Warning

    • Laxatives are commonly used to quickly relieve constipation. However, laxatives are habit-forming and should be used when other methods fail. Increasing your fluid intake, eating more fiber and frequent exercise can help relieve IBS with constipation.

    Expert Insight

    • Two medications are approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of IBS with constipation and diarrhea (lotronex and amitiza). Talk with your doctor to see if you're eligible for these treatment options.
