What percent of cirrhosis patients develop ascites?

Around 50-60% of patients with cirrhosis develop ascites. Ascites is the accumulation of fluid in the peritoneal cavity, which is the space between the abdominal organs and the abdominal wall. It is a common complication of cirrhosis, which is a chronic liver disease characterized by scarring and impaired liver function. Ascites occurs when the liver is unable to produce enough albumin, a protein that helps retain fluid in the blood vessels. This leads to fluid leaking out of the blood vessels and into the peritoneal cavity, causing ascites.
