IBS Patient Information

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a condition that occurs when individuals have alternating patterns of constipation and diarrhea. IBS can affect daily functioning because of associated stomach distress and because of its unpredictability.
  1. Causes

    • IBS occurs because the digestive system either pushes waste too quickly through the intestines, resulting in diarrhea, or when the digestive system pushes waste too slowly through the intestines, resulting in constipation.

    Symptoms

    • Symptoms of IBS include diarrhea, constipation, gas, bloating and abdominal pain and cramping.

    Diagnosis

    • IBS is usually diagnosed based on symptoms. Also, physicians will generally rule out other conditions before making an IBS diagnosis.

    Medical Treatment

    • IBS treatment may consist of eliminated foods that worsen symptoms, such as fatty foods or foods with a high gas content. Also, anti-diarrheal medications and fiber supplements may also be used to control symptoms. According to the Mayo Clinic, antidepressant medications may also be prescribed because they have been shown to help with some stomach symptoms.

    Other Treatments

    • Treatments such as relaxation techniques and regular exercise may help with IBS symptoms.
