Symptoms of Spastic Colitis

Spastic colitis is also called irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). It is an inflammation of the intestines combined with irregular spasms of the intestinal muscles. The symptoms of spastic colitis may flare up during stressful times or during other illnesses or infections. It can occur off and on for the rest of an individual's life. According to the Mayo Clinic and the National Library of Medicine, symptoms of spastic colitis include abdominal pain and chronic constipation.
  1. Bloating

    • Chronic and painful bloating may occur in your abdomen as a result of having spastic colitis.

    Constipation

    • Spastic colitis can slow down the movement of food through the bowels, resulting in constipation and pain during a bowel movement.

    Cramping

    • Abdominal cramping is a symptom of spastic colitis that is usually accompanied by diarrhea. The cramps can extend from the pelvic area to the stomach.

    Flatulence

    • Flatulence (gas) is a result of spastic colitis. The individual may not be able to control or predict when flatulence will occur.

    Hemorrhoids

    • Hemorrhoids develop as a result of having spastic colitis. They may bleed and become irritated after a bowel movement.

    Upset Stomach

    • Upset stomach, including a loss of appetite, nausea and stomach pain are symptoms of spastic colitis that may be chronic.
