Foods to Avoid Gas
You can get gas by inhaling too much air, like when you drink from a straw or chew gum. You can get gas by eating certain foods, too. In order to avoid gas due to the foods you eat, limit dairy, fatty and sugary foods. Some foods you can eat to avoid gas include rice, cooked or canned fruits and boiled eggs.-
Starches and Wheat Bran
-
According to the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse, the only starch you can eat that does not cause you to get gas is rice. Eating wheat bran will not cause gas either, since it is an insoluble fiber.
You don't have to give up starches altogether if you have a gas problem. Skinless mashed potatoes and farina type cereals, such as cream of wheat or a rice option, produce less gas. You can also have items such as pasta, bread or rolls that were made with refined white flour.
Cooked, Canned Fruits
-
While some fruits such as apples can cause gas, you still have other fruit options that you can eat to avoid having gas. These include cooked or canned types of fruits, minus their peel, such as fruit cocktail or applesauce. If you choose fruit juices that do not contain fructose sugar, you can drink your fruit for the day. But if eating fruit is a need of yours and you don't want gas, choose fruits that are lower in fiber, which include plums, kiwi, grapes and nectarines.
Other Foods
-
Eat poached or boiled eggs to avoid gas. Stay away from frying foods, especially eggs. Carrots, summer squash and winter squash are less likely to cause you to get gas, as is vegetable soup, especially if the soup has a clearer broth to it. Eat meats that are low in fat such as lean meats or fish. If you eat poultry, trim the fat from it before baking it.
Other Things to Consider
-
What you drink can cause gas too, such as carbonated drinks like sodas. Beer can cause gas as well. Water, however, does not cause gas. Drinking clear fluids that are not carbonated will help you reduce gas. You can also avoid gas by limiting the amount of sugar-free candy or gum you use, since they contain sorbitol, which causes gas. Some products on the market help reduce gas you get from the foods you eat, too.
