How to Manage the Symptoms of IBS
Irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS, is a type of digestive health disorder. Although not a serious medical condition, IBS can cause a range of symptoms such as stomach pain, constipation and diarrhea. Symptoms tend to worsen when undergoing stress or after eating certain meals. However, it's possible to manage IBS and reduce the severity and occurrence of symptoms. The key is identifying factors that trigger symptoms.Instructions

1
Drink water instead of carbonated and caffeinated drinks. Carbonated drinks like soda can trigger stomach gas and pain, whereas caffeine can bring on diarrhea with IBS. Replace these drinks with water and fruit juices to help manage symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.

2
Eat fiber in moderation. Fiber-rich foods like fruits and vegetables or supplements can help remedy constipation associated with IBS. But, according to the Mayo Clinic, too much fiber can bring on diarrhea and worsen symptoms of IBS. Start slowly and gradually increase your fiber intake to find your tolerance level.

Exercise more. Get your intestines active with exercise or other forms of physical activity. Movement promotes bowel activity and can remedy constipation. Add some sort of activity to your daily routine.

4
Pop a digestive enzyme before eating dairy foods. Lactose in milk, ice cream and cheese can worsen IBS and cause diarrhea. Take a digestive enzyme to help you digest the sugar in dairy products.

Learn how to relax. Anxiety is a common cause of IBS symptoms. Over-the-counter herbal and natural relaxants can ease your mind and body, or you can ask your physician for a prescription anti-anxiety in moderate to severe cases. Exercise also reduces stress hormones, as does a hot bath, massage and plenty of rest.
