Causes of Kidney Infections

Your kidneys are your body's blood, waste and water filtration system. When they are not functioning properly, you are susceptible to complications--some of which can lead to life-threatening conditions. Infections of the kidney, called pyelonephritis, need to be treated in order to avoid serious health problems.
  1. Bladder Infections

    • The most common cause of kidney infections is an infection in the bladder that spreads. Urine can become infected by bacteria and this bacteria can multiply. The infected urine can then back flow into the kidney.

    Infections in the Bloodstream

    • Sometimes bacteria is released during urinary tract surgery, kidney surgery or with infections created by an artificial joint. This bacteria enters the bloodstream, allowing it to be released into the kidney.

    Other Causes

    • An enlarged prostate or kidney stones can cause infections. Both of these can block the bladder from emptying, leading to a kidney infection.

    Catheters

    • Catheters may be used to help drain your bladder when you are unable to urinate. If the tube is left in for too long, and infection can occur.

    Treatment

    • Antibiotics are the first step of treatment for a kidney infection and they need to be taken for a few weeks. Pain medications can be used as well if needed. Some patients find relief using a heating pad. In the case of a severe kidney infection, you will need to be hospitalized.
