How to Find a Nephrologist
Instructions
-
-
1
Contact your primary care physician for a referral to a nephrologist. Generally, primary care physicians have a good professional relationship with other doctors and can steer you towards a physician appropriate for your needs.
-
2
Ask your family members, friends or coworkers (if you feel comfortable doing so) for a nephrologist referral. Maybe someone you know has seen a nephrologist and can recommend one to you. Referrals from friends, family members or other people that you trust can be very helpful in locating a good doctor.
-
3
Find out if your insurance company has a website with a search feature so you can locate a nephrologist in your area. If you find a doctor on the insurance company website, that means the physician is in your network, accepts your insurance and is covered under your plan. If your insurance company does not have a website or provider list online, call your insurance company's customer service phone number for assistance.
-
4
View websites online for databases of nephrologists. Various websites will allow you to search lists of doctors in your area, either by zipcode or by city and state. These websites will also give you contact information for nephrologists in your area.
-
5
Make sure that the nephrologist you select is board certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties. Search their website for your chosen nephrologist or call the board's toll free number 1-866-ASK-ABMS (275-2267). Nephrologists become board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. The website for the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) also can provide information on doctor certification.
-
6
View doctor reviews online. Some websites, either for a fee or as a free service, will allow patients to rate and comment on doctors in a variety of specialties, including nephrology.
