If you have only one kidney and get a urinary tract infection?

A person with only one kidney is at higher risk of kidney infection (pyelonephritis) if they get a urinary tract infection (UTI). If the UTI is not properly treated, it can spread to the kidney and cause serious complications.

It's important for people with only one kidney to seek treatment for a UTI as soon as possible to reduce the risk of developing kidney infection. Symptoms of a UTI that should prompt immediate medical attention include:

- Burning, pain, or urgency when urinating

- Frequent urination

- Cloudy, dark, or foul-smelling urine

- Fever and chills

- Flank pain (pain in the back, just below the ribs)

The doctor will likely prescribe antibiotics to treat the UTI and may recommend other measures such as drinking plenty of fluids and applying heat to the lower back to relieve pain. In severe cases, hospitalization may be necessary.
