Signs and Symptoms of a Kidney Injury

Kidneys are vital organs, responsible for the filtration and chemical balancing of the blood. Without them, the body would be left without a waste management system and would cease to function. While well protected in the body, kidneys can sometimes be prone to injury. Left untreated, renal injuries can sometimes result in kidney failure and death. Therefore, it is very important to understand the signs and symptoms of a kidney injury in order to take immediate action.
  1. Pain

    • The pain from a kidney injury can range from moderate to severe, depending on the extent of the damage. Typically this pain occurs in the upper abdomen, the back and/or the flank (between the rib cage and the hip).

    Blood In Urine

    • The kidneys contain a large blood supply. When these organs sustain a blunt impact or injury, they can release blood into the rest of the urinary tract. A result of this injury can be visible blood in the urine, a condition known as hematuria.

    Bruising

    • If a kidney injury is sustained as a result of blunt trauma or severe impact, bruises can become visible on the body. Typically, bruising that stems from kidney injury can be seen in the upper abdominal area as well as along the flank.

    Urinary Difficulties

    • Renal injuries can sometimes result in problems that affect the entire urinary system. A blow to the kidneys, when left untreated, can cause a decreased output of urine. In severe cases, the ability to urinate can cease altogether.

    Swelling

    • In addition to pain and tenderness, kidney injuries can cause swelling in different parts of the body, namely the back, flank and upper abdomen.
