Pkd Disease

Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a condition in which noncancerous, water-filled cysts form inside of your kidneys. The cysts can grow very large as they accumulate fluid.
  1. Cause

    • PKD is a genetic condition caused by abnormal genes. It can run in families and develop into one of two types of the disease based on specific genetic factors.

    Types

    • A child may inherit autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) when only one parent has PKD. With autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD), both parents must have the genetic flaw.

    Symptoms

    • You may or may not experience any of the symptoms associated with PKD; however, common symptoms may include high blood pressure, urinary or kidney infections and pain associated with enlarged kidneys.

    Diagnosis Methods

    • To diagnose PKD your doctor will use ultrasounds and CT or MRI scans to determine kidney health and detect cysts.

    Treatment

    • PKD treatment usually focuses on treating the various symptoms. Medications are used to lower high blood pressure and antibiotics are prescribed to treat kidney infections. Surgery may be necessary to remove very painful or large cysts.

    Prevention/Solution

    • To prevent complications due to PKD, it is important to maintain your kidney health. Keep your blood pressure in check, eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly.
