Disability Claims for Nephrotic Syndrome
Nephrotic syndrome is a group of symptoms that includes low levels of protein in the blood, high cholesterol, excess protein in the urine, and fluid retention. It can be caused by a number of things, including infection, kidney disease, cancer, immune disorders, diabetes and lupus.-
How Disabling Is It?
-
Nephrotic syndrome itself is usually not very disabling. It causes high blood pressure, edema, weight gain due to fluid retention, and foamy urine--all of which do not normally prevent someone from working. However, some of the conditions that cause nephrotic syndrome may be disabling.
Social Security Disability Insurance
-
Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) provides a monthly check for people unable to work for at least one year due to a disability or medical condition. While it is unlikely that someone will be approved for SSDI on the basis of nephrotic syndrome, he may receive SSDI for an illness that causes it like lupus, kidney disease, or cancer.
State Disability
-
Some states offer disability programs including California, New York, New Jersey, Hawaii and Rhode Island. Programs vary from state to state, but generally, recipients do not have to be disabled for a full year as they do in order to receive SSDI.
Short-Term Disability Insurance
-
Short-term disability insurance policies provide coverage for people unable to work for a short time due to illness or disability. Coverage varies from policy to policy.
Filing for Disability
-
To apply for SSDI, contact the Social Security Administration. To apply for state disability, contact the disability department in your state. To file a claim with against your short-term disability insurance, contact your policy holder.
