How to Test for Adrenal Nodules

Adrenal nodules, also called masses, lumps or incidentalomas, are common and usually benign. The nodules exist on the adrenal glands on top of the kidneys, deep inside the back. Internal imaging tests will reveal adrenal nodules, which aren't palpated because of their location inside the body.

    • 1

Obtain a physician. Discovery of most adrenal nodules occurs accidentally when a CT scan or MRI is performed for some other medical issue. A physician must refer a patient for these tests.

    • 2

Consult with your physician for regular checkups and when you have health issues. You are more likely to find out the presence of the nodule, which often is asymptomatic, if you do this.

    • 3

Document any symptoms. While most nodules are asymptomatic, you can bring some symptoms of adrenal problems to your physician's attention. According to the American Cancer Society, the symptoms vary because of the adrenal glands' wide range of vital functions. Symptoms vary from weight gain and high blood pressure to excessive facial hair on women.

    • 4

Follow through with the CT scan, MRI or ultrasound if your doctor requests one of these procedures. This is the main way to identify nodules.

    • 5

Educate yourself about nodules if you are diagnosed with this condition. A nodule less than 3 centimeters likely is benign. A higher risk exists with nodules 3 to 6 centimeters and needs follow up. Surgery may be warranted for nodules greater than 6 centimeters, showing high levels of hormones or growing.
