Diet Tea for Kidney Disease

If you have kidney disease or diabetes, some ways of preparing tea are better than others. For instance, try to lay off sugar in your tea. Sugar is difficult for one's kidneys to handle. If you have diabetes, it is even more important to manage your blood-glucose level through avoiding sugar and drinking the right tea. Keep reading to learn how else you can use tea to your advantage, especially diet tea.
  1. Keep a Food/Drink Diary

    • Drink diet tea by brewing your tea and not adding any artificial or natural sweeteners. If you feel like your tea is lacking, try a tea that is naturally sweet, like an herbal fruit tea that does not contain any sugar. If you really want to sweeten your tea, consider using agave, which is not as bad as honey, sugar or artificial sweeteners. Keep a food diary recording everything you eat and drink (including any "mess ups").

    Avoid Teas with Caffeine

    • If you have kidney disease, avoid drinking teas with too much caffeine, such as darjeeling, assam and other types of black tea. White and green tea are very low in caffeine. You don't need to put any sugar in these types of teas because they are not very astringent.

Drink Teas that Help with Urine Flow

    • If you have kidney disease, consider drinking corn-silk tea, which helps get your kidneys back to health. Also, cranberry tea is advantageous; it destroys bacteria and re-acidifies one's urine. Sage tea is also helpful in combating kidney problems.
