Cause & Treatment of Kidney Stones

Kidney stones, composed of mineral deposits and acid salts, pass out of the human body through the urine. Although this process can be extremely painful, it does not generally cause permanent damage to the kidneys or urinary system.
  1. Cause

    • An excess of calcium or uric acid can decrease fluid within the urine. Without a proper amount of fluid in the urine, crystals can stick together and become kidney stones. (reference 1)

    Genetics

    • Sometimes kidney stones are formed due to inherited disorders such as kidney disease or metabolic disorders. Preventative treatment to avoid kidney stones might be necessary for people with these disorders. (reference 1)

    Disease

    • Certain diseases, including gout and inflammatory bowel disease, can encourage the formation of kidney stones. (reference 1)

    Treatment

    • Treatment for kidney stones varies according to the type of stone. Sometimes a kidney stone can be allowed pass naturally through the urine. Treatments for larger stones include using shock waves to dislodge the stone or surgery to remove it. (reference 2)

    Preventative Treatment

    • The National Institute of Health suggests drinking at least 12 full glasses of water per day to flush substances from your system that may develop into kidney stones. Consult your doctor about dietary changes that may help prevent the formation of kidney stones. (reference 2)
