Take an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory pain reliever. Ibuprofen (Advil and Motrin) is the most common. The recommended dose for an adult is one tablet every six hours. Naproxen (Aleve) is another choice. The adult dosage for Aleve is one capsule every eight hours.

Ask your doctor for a stronger pain reliever that you can take at home. The doctor will be able to prescribe you something like Tylenol No. 3 (Tylenol with codeine). This will give you more relief than just taking an over-the-counter medication.

Visit the emergency room to get some intravenous medications. These medications will work within seconds of being administered. They also much stronger than any pain reliever you can take at home.
