How to Care for an AV Fistula
An AV fistula, or arteriovenous fistula, is an artery that is surgically connected to a vein, done for the purpose of dialysis. AV fistulas are most frequently done in the forearm. They increase blow flow to the vein, making it bigger. This makes dialysis easier to handle. AV fistulas must mature before they can be used for dialysis, which takes an average of six months. They are the procedure of choice for dialysis patients because they are permanent and carry less risk of complications. You can further reduce these risks by properly caring for your fistula.Things You'll Need

1
Keep your bandage clean. The fistula will be bandaged after the surgery. Notify your physician if it gets wet, dirty or blood-soaked.
-
2
Clean and dry your fistula daily. Once the bandage comes off, wash the area with warm water and soap anytime it gets exposed to dirt or bacteria, such as when handling dirty dishes.
-
3
Check the fistula daily for swelling, redness and warmth. Report any present symptoms to your doctor immediately.
-
4
Use two fingers to feel your AV fistula for a thrill, a vibration akin to that of the purr of a cat, every day. Call your doctor if you can not feel it.
-
5
Listen to your fistula with a stethoscope for a whooshing sound. Notify your doctor if you can not hear it.
-
6
Do upper and lower arm exercises to help your fistula mature faster. Recommended exercises include ball squeezes, fingertip touches, hammer curls and bicep curls. Use 1 to 3 lb. weights and do each exercise for 5 to 10 minutes, six times a day.
