How to Promote Kidney Function

Maintaining homeostasis, kidneys monitor electrolytes and help the body excrete waste. They also regulate blood pressure and the acid-base balance. Kidney problems can lead to heart disease, stroke and cancer. Taking proper care of your kidneys requires adequate nutrition, sufficient intake of water and exercise.

Instructions

Increase your consumption of "super-foods" that help kidneys function properly. They include nuts, leafy greens, whole grains, apples, red bell peppers, egg whites, fish and olive oil. The antioxidants in these foods help to oxidize free radicals, which cause chronic diseases such as heart disease and cancer.

    • 2

Increase your water intake. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommends that each person drinks a minimum of six 8 oz. glasses of water per day in order to promote kidney function.

    • 3

Exercise regularly. Although increasing your physical fitness level will help your body function better overall, no definitive evidence links exercise to better kidney health.

    • 4

Change aspects of your lifestyle that may affect kidney function. For example, quit smoking if you smoke. Decrease your alcohol intake if you are a heavy drinker. Lose weight if you are considered overweight or obese. Cut back on your intake of over-the-counter medications if you take them.
