BK Virus Diet
-
Limit Fluids and Salt
-
BKV patients should measure and limit their intake of fluids such as water, coffee and juices. They should also ensure that all foods are low in sodium to minimize fluid retention.
Balance Minerals
-
Renal patients should eat foods rich in iron, such as beef and chicken. A BKV diet should limit phosphorous, found in many dairy products, but patients need to be sure their calcium is in balance to avoid osteoporosis. They should also avoid foods high in potassium, such as bananas, potatoes and tomatoes and tomato-based products.
Protein, Carbohydrates and Fats
-
BKV patients should choose heart-healthy fats, such as olive oil, and eat lean cuts of protein, such as beef and chicken. Whole-grain baked goods and fruits are healthy carbohydrates that will give energy to a kidney patient experiencing weakness.
