1
Understand that lupus must be "managed" as well as treated. Part of that management includes avoiding overexposure to sunlight and extreme stress.
-
2
Use non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin and ibuprofen to ease mild to moderate lupus pain.
-
3
Take doctor-prescribed drugs for lupus, such as antimalarial drugs, corticosteroids and immunosuppressants. Antimalarial drugs have been especially helpful in treating the joint pain associated with lupus.
-
4
Forgo taking antibiotics, unless ordered by the doctor who is also treating your lupus.
-
5
Avoid exposure to people who are ill. Lupus reduces your resistance to infection.
-
6
Get plenty of rest. Take naps if you need to.
-
7
Exercise moderately to prevent your muscles from becoming weak. Don't overdo it - this will exacerbate your lupus symptoms.
-
8
Have regular medical checkups. This is vital in preventing lupus from spreading to your major organ systems.
-
9
Take a vitamin and mineral supplement, don't smoke, limit alcohol, and eat a well-balanced diet. Some lupus experts recommend following the American Heart Association diet.
