Is lupus and fibromyalgia the same thing?
Lupus and fibromyalgia are two separate medical conditions that can have some similar symptoms, but are not the same.
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), commonly called lupus, is a chronic autoimmune disease that can damage various parts of the body, including the joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, heart, and lungs. Autoimmune diseases are those in which the body's immune system attacks its own tissues and organs rather than foreign invaders like viruses and bacteria. Lupus can range from mild to life-threatening.
Common symptoms of lupus can include:
- Fatigue
- Joint pain, swelling, and stiffness
- Skin problems such as rashes and sun sensitivity
- Fever and headaches
- Mouth sores
- Kidney problems
- Blood disorders such as anemia and low platelet counts
- Neurological problems like seizures, headaches, and confusion
Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized by widespread pain, fatigue, and tenderness in muscles, joints, and other soft tissues. Unlike lupus, fibromyalgia does not cause inflammation or damage to internal organs. Its exact cause is not fully understood, but it's considered a disorder of the nervous system and the way it processes pain signals.
Common symptoms of fibromyalgia include:
- Widespread pain and tenderness
- Fatigue
- Sleep problems
- Cognitive difficulties often called "fibro fog"
- Headaches
- Joint stiffness
- Muscle weakness
- Irritable bowel syndrome
- Depression
While both lupus and fibromyalgia can cause muscle and joint pain, fatigue, and other common symptoms, they differ in terms of their underlying mechanisms, the extent of organ involvement, and the treatments used to manage them. It's essential to consult a medical professional for a proper diagnosis and individualized treatment plan if you suspect you have symptoms similar to lupus or fibromyalgia.
