How to Get Rid of Mucus With Steam

Mucus or phlegm can accumulate in your lungs or other areas of your respiratory tract. Severe causes of mucus in certain parts of the respiratory system can be a result of bronchitis, pneumonia or emphysema. The use of steam is an inexpensive way to dispel mucus since the only product necessary for steam is water and heat. Be careful when working with steam because you can still experience severe burns.

Instructions

    • 1

Boil a pot of water. Choose a pot that will allow you to place your face in front of it. Fill the water halfway from the top.

    • 2

Remove the pot from the heat and set it on a heat-resistant surface where you can comfortably sit or stand over the pot.

    • 3

Add several drops of eucalyptus oil to the water for an added herbal remedy to break up the mucus.

    • 4

Place a towel over your head and place your face over the pot. The steam should directly rise to your nasal passages because the towel is keeping the steam from going in different directions. Maintain a safe, yet comfortable distance from the pot so you will not burn your skin. Inhale deeply.
