Beam Laser Treatment
Laser (Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation) beam technology has a variety of medical applications including cancer therapy, skin treatments and eye correction surgery. As with any medical procedure, laser treatments involve some level of risk.-
Skin Treatment
-
Laser treatments for the skin specifically address conditions such as pigment problems, broken capillaries, acne scarring, wrinkles and brown spots caused from sun damage. There are various types of laser beams that emit different wavelengths, such as the ruby laser, the pulsed dye laser and the medlite laser. The type of laser used for a particular condition depends on a person's skin type.
Vision Correction
-
Laser treatment procedures such as LASIK (Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) and PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) improve vision problems. LASIK and PRK use laser beams to reshape the cornea of the eye. 20 to 30 year old adults with near-sightedness, far-sightedness or astigmatism are considered potential candidates for cornea reshaping laser surgeries.
Cancer Treatment
-
Laser treatments were first used on skin tumors in 1961 (See Reference 3). Laser beams can kill or shrink cancer cells found in esophageal cancer, squamous cell carcinoma, large cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma. A common medical laser treatment used on cancer patients is called photodynamic therapy, or PDT.
