Types of Testosterone Replacement

As a man's body ages the production of testosterone naturally slows. Symptoms of this decline in testosterone include depression, erectile dysfunction and decreased sex drive. Although the body reduces testosterone production with age there can also be a myriad of other causes for this decrease, ranging from infection in the testicles to cirrhosis of the liver to AIDS and pituitary dysfunction. There are several different options for testosterone replacement therapy, each with its own pros and cons. Consult with a physician before determining which treatment is most appropriate for you.
  1. Transdermal Patch

    • A transdermal patch is available in two varieties, each offering the benefit of maintaining stable hormone levels due to daily application. The first patch is applied directly to the testicle once a day. The downside is that it requires you to shave your scrotum area twice per week to allow absorption of the testosterone into the skin. The other patch can be applied to your back, shoulder or rear end. As with any medicinal patch, sweating, swimming or other moisture-exposing activities can cause the patch to fall off your body. The patch can also cause skin irritation.

    Body Gel

    • Androgel is applied daily to your shoulders, core or back. It is the most expensive of the treatment options but also ensures consistent hormone absorption. With a topical gel, it is more difficult to prevent accidental contact between the medicine and another person such as a spouse. There is also the decreased efficacy if you are exposed to sweat or moisture on your bare skin.

    Intramuscular Injections

    • Intramuscular injections are a good option if you do not want to risk someone else coming into contact with your hormone treatment and if you don't mind making a trip to the doctors office every two to three weeks. As you might expect, an injection cannot mirror the consistent delivery of a daily testosterone administration. This can result in experiencing sharp boosts of energy or sex drive immediately after the injection, and the feeling of falling flat again as you near the time of your next appointment.
