How to Keep Track of Prescription Meds

It is important to keep track of your prescription medications to assure that everything is being taken as prescribed. This will assure that the patient is treated properly and doesn't experience any negative side-effects from taking something incorrectly. Prescription management starts with knowing what you're taking and when it needs to be taken. You can then keep track of your prescriptions in the way that works best for you.

Maintain a record of every medication you take, when and how often they're to be taken, what they're for, what they look like and possible side effects. Keep this somewhere that can be easily referenced if you have any questions about your prescription medications.

    • 2

Take your medicine at the same time or with the same event each day. If you always take medication with a certain meal, when you wake up or before you go to sleep, you're more likely to remember to take it.

    • 3

Put your pills in a pill organizer. These are especially helpful if you need to take a large number of pills each day. There are pill organizers that contain different numbers of compartments. You can get one that has a compartment for each day or one that has hourly compartments if you want to know exactly what time each pill is to be taken.

Use a calendar or reminder notes. Keep a reminder displayed in a place that you will be sure to see it, such as a refrigerator or a mirror.

    • 5

Ask a friend or relative to remind you when to take your medication. Elderly or ill people may not benefit from pill organizers or calendars.
