What to Do for Hemorrhoid Itch

Hemorrhoids are inflamed and swollen veins in your rectum and anus. According to the Mayo Clinic, hemorrhoids are a very common occurrence; half of adults over 50 have experienced the annoying itching and burning attributed to hemorrhoids.

    • One of the best ways to prevent the itching of hemorrhoids is to learn what causes them. Sitting for too long on the toilet, straining during a bowel movement, pregnancy, and being overweight can all lead to hemorrhoids.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Over-the-counter medication, such as Preparation H, can reduce the itching of hemorrhoids. Suppositories and pads are available as well. If the itching continues for more than one week, see your doctor.

    Considerations

    • Home remedies such as soaking in a warm bathtub and using wet wipes rather than toilet paper may reduce hemorrhoidal itching. Also, keeping the anal area clean after using the bathroom can help with itching.
