What Are the Causes of Morning Dizziness?

Morning dizziness describes the sensation of feeling unsteady, faint or lightheaded upon waking up. According to the Mayo Clinic, dizziness is one the most common reasons people see a doctor but, in most cases, rarely is a symptom of anything serious.
  1. Types

    • There are numerous reasons you may feel dizzy in the morning. Anything from getting out of bed too quickly to morning sickness to migraines can be the culprit behind what is causing your dizziness.

    Considerations

    • Morning dizziness can also be a sign of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, according to the Mayo Clinic. This is the most common cause of vertigo and usually occurs when you shift the position of your head, such as when you wake in the morning.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Your doctor may recommend tests such as checking your blood pressure, brain MRI or neurological exams to rule out serious causes of dizziness. However, morning dizziness is usually the result of something harmless or self-limiting and does not require treatment.
