Remedies for Excessively Sweaty Feet

If nature has handed you sweaty feet, there are some effective remedies to help resolve this problem. Medically known as ''plantar hyperhidrosis,'' excessively sweaty feet may make wearing shoes uncomfortable, and can even lead to bacterial and fungal infections.

Proper hygiene, foot powder, deodorant and antiperspirant can make your feet dry and smelling good.
  1. Hygiene

    • Wash your feet to keep them free from bacteria that feasts on sweat.

Sweat is basically composed of salt and water. It is bacteria that causes feet to stink. Wash your feet frequently with a strong antibacterial soap, change your cotton socks often, and alternate the shoes your wear.

    Powder

    • Foot powder will keep your feet cool, dry and smelling good.

After washing, apply foot powder to keep your feet cool and dry.

Suzanne M. Levine, a clinical assistant podiatrist at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, suggests sprinkling the insides of your shoes with talcum powder or cornstarch.

    Antiperspirant

    • Antiperspirants can help relieve sweaty feet.

While foot deodorants may help keep odors at bay, what you really want to combat excessive sweatiness are antiperspirants. A good antiperspirant containing aluminum chloride hexahydrate may be helpful.

    Shoes

    • Chose open shoes to let your feet breathe.

Closed shoes cause feet to sweat more and can help create the dark, environment that breeds bacteria. If weather permits, or when you are at home, choose sandals and open-toed shoes. Be wary of shoes made of rubber or plastic, which do not allow feet to breathe easily and encourage sweating.
