Georgia State Elevator Wheelchair Lift Regulations
Wheelchair users require ramps and elevators to change level. Elevators must be provided in certain public institutions, where ramp installation is not practical for the change of level, for example one floor to another. Regulations regarding elevators for wheelchairs in the State of Georgia are covered by the Georgia Accessibility Code and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).-
Location
-
Elevators for disabled use, must be on an accessible route. Freight elevators do not count unless the only elevators provided are for combined passenger and freight use.
Operation
-
Elevator operation must be automatic with a self-leveling feature that brings the car to within half an inch of floor landings, correcting for load size.
Hall Call Buttons
-
Buttons in elevator halls and lobbies should be positioned at a height of 42 inches. They should have visual indicators to show when the button has been pressed and is answered. They must have minimum dimensions of three quarters of an inch in the smallest dimension. The "Up" button should be positioned above the "Down" button and the buttons should be raised or flushed. Any objects that are mounted below the buttons must not protrude more than four inches.
Lanterns
-
A visible and audio signal should be provided above each lift to denote which car is answering the call. Audible signals should sound once for going up or twice for going down, or have recordings stating the direction.
Braille
-
All elevator entrances should have raised and braille designations on both sides of the doorway. These should be fixed at 60 inches high and the characters should have a height of 2 inches minimum.
Elevator Doors
-
Elevator doors should open and close automatically with a device provided to re-open if the door becomes obstructed. Door opening devices must remain effective for at least 20 seconds before closing. The minimum time for the doors to remain open once the car has been called is three seconds.
Floor Plan
-
The floor plan of the elevator must allow a wheelchair user to enter, reach the controls and exit without obstruction. The gap between the car and landing must be no greater than one and a quarter inches.
Car Controls
-
The car controls should be at a height of 54 inches on the front wall if the car has center opening doors, or the side wall if the car has side opening doors. The buttons must have minimum dimensions of three quarters of an inch in the smallest dimension. All controls should be designated by braille and raised standard alphabet characters. The car position indicators should be provided above the control panel or the door of the car.
