Anosmia Information

According to the Mayo Clinic, anosmia is the inability to smell. There are many reasons why a person experiences anosmia. The condition can be temporary or permanent, depending upon the condition that causes it.
  1. Causes

    • Anosmia can be caused by exposure to environmental toxins, or by using certain types of drugs such as amphetamines, according to Merck. Several other causes include allergy problems, rhinitis and sinusitis. Head trauma or a brain tumor can also make a person lose the sense of smell.

    Dangers of Anosmia

    • Smell is directly related to taste, so a person who cannot smell, cannot completely taste or enjoy foods. The Mayo Clinic warns that this can cause malnutrition or weight loss. The inability to smell can be hazardous in case of a fire. In addition, a person who cannot smell or taste does not know when food has become rancid. This can lead to food poisoning.

    Prognosis

    • There is no cure for anosmia in itself. Most cases clear up on their own within several days, but sometimes the condition is permanent. The Mayo Clinic recommends that people with anosmia install smoke alarms in their homes. The website also suggests having a different person smell questionable food to make sure it is safe to eat.
