Nandrolone Phenylpropionate in Women

Nandrolone phenylpropionate is an anabolic female steroid prescribed by doctors for conditions such as aplastic anemia and osteoarthritis. However, it is sometimes used illegally by athletes who acquire it without a valid prescription.
  1. Function

    • In 1983 the Food and Drug Administration approved nandrolone phenylpropionate due to its effectiveness in treating osteoporosis, anemia, and certain types of breast cancers. It also has the ability to promote muscle growth but is rarely prescribed by a doctor for this reason.

    Side Effects

    • Women using nandrolone phenylpropionate without a prescription are generally athletes attempting to build muscle and increase endurance. Side effects women may encounter include acne, deeper voice, sterility, irregular menses, increased body hair and thinning scalp hair. According to the International Programme on Chemical Safety, long term use of this steroid poses serious health threats including liver damage.

    Considerations

    • The Association Against Steroid Abuse reports that steroid use is more dangerous for women than men, as the female body is not as well equipped to deal with external hormones. They also state that a woman using steroids is at increased risk for infertility and cervical cancer.
