How to Prevent Water Weight - Stop Bloating

When your body retains water, the result is often water weight and bloating. Water retention and water weight affect both sexes, but are more common in women than men. Women often retain water during their menstrual cycles, causing their clothing to feel uncomfortably tight. Fortunately, you can prevent water retention and bloating by altering your diet and becoming more active.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut back on your salt intake. Too much salt in the diet causes your body to retain water. Keep your daily intake of salt under 1,500 mg.

    • 2

Drink more water to stimulate urination and flush excess salt and water from your body. Drink at least eight 8 oz. glasses of water a day and add other liquids like decaffeinated tea and coffee to your diet.

    • 3

Eat more fruits and vegetables. According to the Mayo Clinic, onions, watermelons, cucumbers and grapes all have a high water content and can help prevent or alleviate water weight.

    • 4

Lose excess water through sweating. Come up with an exercise routine to minimize water weight. Aim for 30 minutes, three to five times a week. Go for a jog or walk or watch a workout DVD.
