Home Treatments for Cauliflower Ear

Also known as wrestler’s ear or boxer’s ear, cauliflower ear is a type of deformity in the outer ear. In this type of injury, your ear can fold and shrivel up on itself and will appear pale, resembling a cauliflower. Martial artists, boxers and wrestlers are very susceptible to this injury. When your ear gets struck and a blood clot forms under the skin, or when cartilage skin is sheared, this causes a disruption in the ear structure. Fortunately, there are some home treatments for cauliflower ear.
  1. Garlic Treatment

    • Take two or three garlic cloves and heat them in a microwave or toaster oven until they are soft and tender. Allow them to cool to room temperature. Take one of the cloves and smash it. Hold and press it against your cauliflower ear lobe. Use a towel to hold the garlic clove in place. Keep pressing the garlic on your ear lobe for about 15 to 20 minutes. Crush or squeeze the other garlic clove and keep its juice. Keep it in room temperature and, one to two times a day, rub some garlic juice on your ear lobe. Garlic has natural anti-inflammatory properties and will help reduce the swelling of your ear tissues.

    Cold Treatment

    • Use a cold cloth, an ice pack or even chilled cabbage leaves on your outer ear lobe. Cold applications will help reduce the swelling in your ear. Apply the cold compress for 10 to 15 minutes per session, two to three times a day.

    Arnica Ointment

    • You may also apply Arnica ointment on your injury three to four times a day for a week. Arnica is a type of herb that promotes healing. It is commonly used to treat fractures, sprains, tears and other sports-related injuries. It also helps in treating bruises.

    Pressure

    • Pressure can also help with cauliflower ear. Take a dry clean cloth and use it to directly apply pressure on the outer portion of your injured ear. Use the cloth to cover your ear while pressing and squeezing it. Maintain pressure on your injured ear for 15 to 20 minutes. Applying pressure will alleviate the tissue swelling and reduce the internal bleeding. You can also wrap a bandage around your head while pressing the ear to the side of your head. Tightly wrapping your head will help keep the pressure on and will hasten the healing process. You can rub either garlic juice or Arnica ointment on your ear before wrapping with a bandage. Place cotton balls on your ear lobe for cushioning inside the bandage.
