What Are the Causes of Infections of Nasal & Sinus Mucosal Cells?

Sinusitis is a medical condition in which infections develop in the mucosal cells of the nasal cavities and sinuses. This condition has several causes. In rare cases, it may result in complications.
  1. Sinusitis

    • Sinusitis inflames the sinuses. It often follows a case of the common cold.

    Causes

    • Mucous membranes of the nose and sinuses that are moist and congested can become infected, because they provide an environment for bacteria and other infectious agents to grow.

    Symptoms

    • People with sinusitis may develop nasal discharge and congestion, fever and headaches. Fatigue, sore throat and coughing can also occur with this condition.

    Complications

    • In rare instances, sinusitis patients may develop meningitis, bone infections or skin infections near the eyes.

    Treatment

    • Doctors may prescribe antibiotics for chronic cases of sinusitis, but many cases clear up on their own with plenty of fluids and over-the-counter pain relievers.
