Uses for Cromolyn Sodium

Cromolyn sodium is used as an anti-inflammatory medicine. It works by preventing inflammation in the body by blocking substances that cause inflammation. Cromolyn sodium is also called cromoglycic acid. While commonly used to prevent allergic attacks, cromolyn sodium is also used for other off-label causes. Off-label uses are commonly referred to as conditions that are not approved by the maker of the medication for use, but studies have shown improvement while taking the medication.

    • Cromolyn sodium comes in inhalation form for asthma.

      Cromolyn sodium when used to treat asthma, prevents breathing difficulty. To prevent asthma attacks, you must use cromolyn sodium on a regular basis. You can also use it prior to the onset of an attack if you know what will trigger one, such as allergies and exercise-induced asthma. Cromolyn sodium is mostly administered via oral inhalation for asthma.

    Allergic Conjunctivitis

    Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis

Cromolyn sodium works the same way for GI disorders as it works for asthma by blocking the release of substances that cause inflammation.

    Mastocytosis

    • Cromolyn sodium is used to treat symptoms of the condition mastoytosis. Mastocytosis disease is the excess accumulation of mast cells in various parts of the body. Side effects of mastocytosis are vomiting, headaches, itchy skin, stomach pain, diarrhea and flushing of the skin. Cromolyn sodium works by blocking the release of mast cell mediators and alleviating some of the side effects of mastoytosis.

    Atopic Dermatitis

    • According to the studies performed by the pediatric department at La Sapienza University of Rome, Italy, children who suffered from skin lesions caused by atopic dermatitis, or eczema, saw significant improvement when oral cromolyn sodium was administered. Atopic Dermatitis is common with children with food allergies. Cromolyn sodium is administered as an oral solution or a topical solution for people who suffer from atopic dermatitis.
